With 1391 metres gained in altitude difference, this is a long and challenging mountain run.

The Penken-Trophy begins with a flat, warm-up section through the centre of Mayrhofen, leading off in a westerly direction along the banks of the Ziller River and then on to a gravel forest trail before the first ascent begins. The trail is steep to start with and then flattens out somewhat through the forest. After a level section, the second ascent begins along a steep trail which subseuently  leads to a flatter asphalt road. Past the Gchößwandhaus Guesthouse and through lush meadows, the trail leads to the first target point at the top station of the Penken Lifts. The final two kilometres lead slightly uphill along a gravel road until the end of the route at the Penkenalm.
